Scott Reed Awarded NSF Graduate Research Fellowship
Computer Science and Engineering doctoral student Scott Reed has been selected for two prestigious graduate fellowships to support his ongoing studies in computer science and engineering. The fellowships are from the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program and the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship from the Department of Defense.
As a first-year PhD student at Michigan, Mr. Reed has worked with Professor Honglak Lee to develop new machine learning methodologies to solve problems in computer vision and other domains. The research has focused on using Deep Learning and graphical models to learn representations of high-dimensional data that can be used for object recognition, scene-understanding and potentially other artificial intelligence-level tasks.
The National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master’s and doctoral degrees in the U.S. and abroad. NSF Graduate Research Fellowships are the most prestigious awards available to students beginning their graduate studies in the sciences.
National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship selections are made by the Air Force Research Laboratory/Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFRL/AFOSR), the Office of Naval Research (ONR), the Army Research Office (ARO), and the DoD High Performance Computing Modernization Program Office (HPCMO). The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) administers the NDSEG Fellowship. The DoD offers these fellowships to individuals who have demonstrated the ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering.
